First Year Students

Get Involved with the Student Engineers’ Council (SEC) at VT Engineering!

As a first-year engineering student, connecting with the Student Engineers’ Council (SEC) is a great way to enhance both your academic journey and social experience at Virginia Tech. Follow these four easy steps to stay informed, get involved, and build lasting connections within the engineering community:

Step 1: Join the SEC Listserv

Stay in the loop by subscribing to the SEC Listserv! You'll receive timely updates about major events, including career fairs, social activities, and signature annual programs like the Engineering Expo, Engineers' Week (E-Week), and the Engineering Ball (E-Ball). Don’t miss out on what’s happening in your engineering community.

Step 2: Build Your Resume

Everyone needs a resume to showcase their skills. A resume is a great first step to showing recruiters what you've got. When you register for Expo in the next step, you wil upload this resume.

If you already have a resume, great! Review the checklist and proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Register for the Engineering Expo

Hosted by the SEC, the Engineering Expo is one of the largest student-run career fairs in the country. Open to students of all majors and years, it’s a prime opportunity to network with employers, explore internships and job opportunities, and practice your professional skills. Be sure to upload your resume during registration.

Step 4: Stay Connected with SEC

Follow us on InstagramLinkedIn, Twitter, to stay updated on events, opportunities, and community highlights. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the SEC network at VT!

Get Involved – Join an SEC Committee

Looking to take your involvement to the next level? The Student Engineers’ Council (SEC) offers a variety of opportunities to engage in meaningful student leadership within the Virginia Tech College of Engineering.

Joining a committee is one of the best ways to get started with the SEC. Committees serve as a gateway to the organization, allowing you to contribute directly to impactful initiatives, build valuable skills, and collaborate with fellow engineering students.

Whether you're interested in event planning, outreach, professional development, or day-to-day operations, there’s a committee for you. Step into a leadership role and help shape the engineering student experience at VT.
