Gebreyes Service Scholarship

$2k to 2 students ($4k total)

The Nathaniel Gebreyes Service Scholarship was established by the SEC in 2001 to honor the ideals of service that Nathaniel represented throughout his life. Nathaniel was a 1985 graduate of the Industrial Engineering and Operational Research Department (now Industrial and Systems Engineering) at Virginia Tech. Prior to enrollment at Virginia Tech, he immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia, after walking to Sudan due to the political unrest within the country. He attended Stonewall Jackson High School. Nathaniel was only weeks away from beginning graduate study at the University of Virginia in 1988 when he was killed by a drunk driver.

The Nathaniel Gebreyes Service Scholarship is awarded annually to 2 rising juniors or seniors who have portrayed outstanding service principles to the university and the community. The scholarship will be awarded at the SEC Awards Banquet held February 24th, 2022.
